If you want people to guess about what you need, just keep right (right) on doing what you're doing. Having said all that, I'm curious what the options are, though, because I don't know how I'd fix this with a Mac. With Linux, and with physical access to the computer, I'd boot a USB stick with Linux, mount the volume, chroot to the mount, and run passwd.
