Think instead of seed and plant.  Sure, seeds produce plants, which in 
turn produce seeds, but... think instead of *a plant and its own seed*, 
i.e. the seed that produced it: "the seed is the plant and the plant is 
the seed, but the seed comes before the plant".

(BTW, talking of inversions...)
