To be able to write something like "i^4", which seems to mean in your 
thick brain "i*i*i*i", you implicitly assume that your "*" is an 
associative operator, otherwise "i^4" means nothing at all.

Then, if "*" is associative,
i^4 = i*i*i*i = i*(i*i)*i = (i*i)*(i*i) = (i*i)^2.
If you assume i^2 = i*i = -1, then i^4=1.
