This is because the CDC and USDA have wanted to downplay their bungled efforts to date. When the first fatality resulted from exposure to backyard birds I noted that the CDC should be warning animal ownwers about what they should be looking out for, and how to deal with the situation. The USDA should have been doing the same thing, and they should have been tracking where Avian influenza existed in wild birds and warning people in those areas. They need to tell the people what symptoms to look out for in their animals, and they need to tell them that they have to minimize animal contact if they start seeing those symptoms and they need to contact the USDA or CDC and get their animals tested. It sounds simple, but both organizations have refused to do it. Ron Okimoto
