This wasn't on the heating system. This is the house server to be.

The heating system logs to a ram log if it logs at all. Just put 
volatile in the systemd config and it goes to /var/run/log. I have it 
limited at 25M

So it's (systemd) fine if you don't want to keep any logs at all and 
certainly not on an SD card.

It's the server where I need decent control of logging.

There are a lot of broken DNS servers out there it seems....
