No idea. I don't watch reality shows from *any* country, including this one.

Why just men? The whole concept seems equally demeaning to both the men
*and* the women involved.

Mind you, I remember a passage in The Gulag Archipelago where
Solzhenitsyn mentions cases where men married women sight unseen in the
labour camps. Apparently, camps that had both men and women had separate
areas for men and women with a tall solid fence between them that kept
the men and women from seeing each other. Sometimes, someone on one side
of the fence heard someone on the other side of the fence talking their
own language - the Soviet Union had a lot of ethnic minorities, many of
which did not have Russian as a first language - so a Ukrainian man
might hear a Ukrainian woman on the other side of the fence. They would
strike up a conversation and, if they hit it off, might eventually get
an appropriate clergyman to marry them, still sight unseen. (Lenin and
Stalin were both militant atheists so LOTS of clergymen got sent to the
Gulag.)

Of course these marriages were fraught with difficulties given that the
couple was on opposite sides of a fence. I've read a number of books on
the subject and can't recall ever hearing of situations where the new
couple would be allowed to be on the same side of the fence during their
sentence. Then there's the problem of surviving your sentence.
Solzhenitsyn says only 1 in 7 people even survived their sentences.
Given the incredible privation involved - dangerous work under
deplorable conditions with minimal food, frequently in extremely harsh
environments (picture -50 or colder) - even if you survived your
sentence, the spouse you'd never seen might not and you might well end
up as a widow/widower, never having seen your spouse let alone having
consummated your marriage.

In case you're thinking that you could endure a sentence in the Gulag
standing on your head that might be possible if you'd been arrested in
Lenin's day when the sentences were usually only 2 or 3 years but Stalin
was much harsher and soon the norm was 8 to 10 years. By the post-war
era it was 25 years. You really didn't have to do much to get one of
those sentences either!
