Are you familiar with her? Not in the biblical sense, but the 
entertainment sense ;-) She's a singer/songwriter dating back to the 
folkie era. I have no idea how well known she is in the US although she 
shouldn't be completely unknown to you given that some of her songs have 
been successful, although most of them became hits for other people 
doing them as covers. I'm personally not a fan of her vocal style.

Despite claiming for decades that she was a Cree from Saskatchewan, she 
was actually born in Massachusetts to an Italian father and a mother of 
English heritage. Her surname at birth was Santamaria but due to 
anti-Italian sentiment at the time, the family changed it to the 
French-sounding Sainte-Marie.
