My home Pi's run off SD cards but never in normal use write to them AT ALL. There is a series of configuration you can do that moves logging to RAMdisk and any temporary files to RAMdisk as well - and you turn swap off. For small applications that is a perfect way to have access to Linux, but not go to the expense of a proper SSD -- In theory, there is no difference between theory and practice.
