My aunt had a detached retina and had to spend a few weeks face down on 
the bed with a special pillow to make sure it didn't detach again after 
the surgery.  Without following those specific instructions she could 
have gone blind.  Seems to me that's a lot more important than 
forgetting to cancel another appointment.
