With shock absorbing material, and a raised edge so the glass doesn't contact the surface if it falls on the face, phones can take a lot of abuse. Apple has long been discouraging people from using cases, saying that the glass is strong enough to not break if the phone falls on its face, though there is actually a bigger reason why they discourage cases. The case is an insulator that traps heat that is supposed to be radiating out the back of the phone. A case can also interfere with wireless charging, Magsafe or other. Gorilla Glass Victus 2 on the Pixel 9 Pro is probably like Apple's "Ceramic Shield" and both are made by Corning. The state-of-the-art in smartphone glass is Corning Gorilla Armor 2, used on the Samsung Galaxy S25. Apple will probably have an equivalent glass for the iPhone 17. Will be interesting to see how the new Republican import taxes will affect phone prices.
