I have some idea. Over the years, two of my closest colleagues at work
were from Iran, one was from Bangladesh. The last of those, one of the
most prolific research article publishers in our university, left
because of tremendous difficulties getting his wife (an Italian
physician) back into the country after she left for a while to care for
her ailing mother.

Well, in the case of my grandparents, the system "filtered" for badly
needed cheap labor in the local steel mills. I imagine it was probably
similar for your grandparents. And both ethnicities had to put up with
bashing and abuse, as did the Chinese, the Irish, and many other ethnic
groups.

ISTM the default attitude is "We need you to work nearly for free. But
you're no good."
