What a Week!

1 April: April Fool's Day (everywhere there are fools)
	Didn't hear much about this
But in Cyprus it was Cyprus National Day.

It was called EOKA (Εθνική Οργάνωσις Κυπρίων Αγωνιστών (Ethnikí 
Organósis Kipriakóu Agónos),  'National Organisation of Cypriot 
Fighters') (or National Organisation of the Cypriot Struggle),
and fought for Cyprus's independence from colonial Britain, and for 
union with Greece (known as enosis).

2 April: "Liberation Day" (parts of USA)
	Hope you didn't overdo the fireworks and dancing in the streets.
Down Argentina way, it was Malvinas Day.
	"Las Malvinas" is the Spanish name for the Falkland Islands. Some of 
you may remember the Anglo-Argentine war over these islands. 2 April 
1982 was the start of Operación Rosario, the Argentine "invasion" of the 
islands. (I don't know whether they use that word.) ...which was the 
start of the war.

4 April: Tomb-Sweeping Day (China and Hong Kong and many diasporic 
communities) (Also called Qingming [clear brightness] Festival, Chinese 
Memorial Day, etc) . "Chinese families visit the tombs of their 
ancestors to clean the gravesites and make ritual offerings to their 
ancestors."

"In Taiwan, the Qingming Festival was not a public holiday until 1972. 
Three years later, upon the death of Chiang Kai-shek on 5 April 1975, 
the Kuomintang government declared that the anniversary of Chiang's 
death be observed alongside the festival. The practice was abolished in 
2007."
Tomb-Sweeping Day continues but...Taiwan now has Children's Day on the 
same day! "This day is known as “Guo Qing Jie” (國慶節) in Chinese, which 
means “National Celebration Festival.”

7 April: Chakri Memorial Day (Wan Chakkri) (Thailand)
	"commemorates the establishment of the Chakri Dynasty and the founding 
of Bangkok by King Phutthayotfa Chulalok in 1782"
AND
Hùng Kings Commemoration Day (Vietnam)
"Although the official name is the Death Anniversary of the Hùng Kings 
(Giỗ Tổ Hùng Vương), the festival does not mark any specific date of 
death for any Hùng King."
