I have long known that the last actual Civil War veteran finally died in 1959 (NOT a typo!) but it was only many years later that I learned that a number of very old Civil War veterans married very young women late in their lives and that those widows continued to receive veteran's benefits until their own deaths. I can't help but wonder what inspired a very young woman to marry a very old man. I assume it was a purely financial arrangement whereby an old man could gift a young woman - maybe a grand-niece or grandchild of a cousin - with a small but steady income for the rest of her life. -- Rhino
