Thus when he posts without any non-ASCII characters, it uses US-ASCII and 7-bit encoding. That includes replying to Muttley after Muttley's client failed to understand the "quoted-printable" encoding and thus interpreted the quoted-printable characters naïvely. Michael's posts do use UTF-8 when he uses non-ASCII characters, and certainly Thunderbird has no problem with the quoted-printable encoding (though it uses 8-bit encoding for its own posts when 7-bit is not enough).
