The head minister, or head pastor is usually the founder or the leader 
that led the splitting of another congregation, binky's "Church" has 
quite the list of pastors but they don't answer to anyone but themselves.

Tithes support all the salaries of their pastors and staff and building 
maintenance and mortgage if any.  It also pays for all the multi-media 
equipment at the front of the congregation.  One cannot worship without 
those big screens and special effects.

The key selling point is you do not need to think, they provide all the 
answers, in fact thinking is strongly discouraged.
