It will depend on which version of iOS you're using, but for newer ones 
try going to Settings -> General -> iPhone Storage -> Messages where 
you should be able to get a list of the attachments, and delete ones 
you no longer want. See the "Bulk Delete Photos, Videos, and 
Attachments" section about halfway down the page at

You can also set messages to auto-delete after 30 days or a year in 
Settings -> Apps -> Messages
