This reminds me of my grandad.  A few weeks before his School Finals, he 
took part in the German Rowing Championships (Dresden, 1921) as a cox, 
winning the 8's easily by more than a boat length.
They got a gold medal but the second finishers were celebrated as German 
Champions (Aussig - today Usti - was in Czechoslovakia).
