When I came to the US to work at NASA I had a J visa, which also sufficed when I moved to a university. J visas were limited to seven years after which holders were supposed to go back to their home countries, though many got exemptions and did not. When I switched to the private sector, though, I was told I needed an H1 visa - though I actually worked under a TN visa as I was denied the H1. The only H1 visa holder at our company got full pay, but this was before the current H1B wave. William Hyde
