We don’t … but the Doctor does. Literally. MattDoc counts his
previous incarnations in The Time Of The Doctor, includes the
War and Metacrisis Doctors and concludes he’s really the
13th, not 11th. Which means by the Doctor’s own reckoning,
Capaldi must be the real 14th Doctor, even though we all
call him the 12th.

Confusing isn’t it?
