I suspect you could've gone into the Android app list, selected GV, and just stopped the app (to make sure it isn't running backgrounded), cleared the app's cache, cleared the app's data (you get warned about data loss), and then load the app again whereupon you need to restate your account credentials. I don't remember the cause, but I do recall have to do the above to get the GV app working again. Google changed something in a new version of their app that didn't like the old data stored for the app. The config for the app gets retrieved from your GV account, so those settings would get downloaded into the fresh load of the app. In fact, I had the GV service setup for a couple years before I started using their app on my Android phone. As I recall, all the app's settings came from my GV account, so I didn't have to do any setup in the app. All I had to do was let the app log into my Google account.
