S'il existe plusieurs milliers de stations météo, des satellites qui 
couvrent 100% de la surface du globe (ou presque) et des milliers de 
flotteurs argo, il n'existe qu'une poignée d'endroits où l'on mesure les 
concentrations atmosphérique de CO₂. Mauna Loa est la station de 
référence, celle fondée par Keeling. La série systématique la plus longue.
La corrélation entre les variations de température "globale" et les 
concentrations de CO2 à l'observatoire de Mauna Loa sont bien visibles. 
Les variations de température précèdent les variations de CO2 d'environ 
6 à 7 mois.
