Bon, je n'avais pas rêvé.

En fouillant dans about:config, j'ai trouvé cette option :
browser.download.start_downloads_in_tmp_dir

Par défaut, la valeur est "false".

Une recherche sur cette option m'a envoyé sur cette page (en anglais) :

À voir à l'usage mais le problème semble donc résolu.
