On dit les deux. La fréquence d'une expression ne la rend ni correcte ni 
incorrecte.

Je me demandais si cela vous dérange à cause du "s" à la fin de 
"shambles". Peut-être ne voulez-vous pas mettre "a" devant un mot qui 
semble être un pluriel.

Je vois où un·e allophone aurait peut-être des problèmes à l'accepter.

Toutefois, on peut dire la même chose pour "in a mess" (phrase synonyme).

She left the room a mess.

She left the room in a mess.

Bon, de l'écoute intéressante (NPR, c'est tout ce que j'écoute quand 
j'écoute la radio (à part Sirius XM).
