Cette phrase est douteuse, même fautive. Il faudrait dire :
« ... what would have happened had it not failed. »

L'inversion avec une phrase conditionelle n'est pas vraiment
remarquable ... mais j'y suis habitué car cette construction est
plus repandue en allemand. :-)
