Je savais que c'est une chanson très personnelle dédiée à sa femme.
Malgré cela, Clapton écrit dans la troisième strophe

Il fait bien référence ici à son passé et au stress dans lequel il baignait.

Il y a apparemment un quiproquo, ici.
Il ne s'agit pas de l'interprétation du contenu complet de cette chanson 
mais uniquement de la phrase « When we were running in and out of time ».

Exactement mon propos ! À l'époque, il était stressé. Depuis, il s'est 
calmé, assagi.
