An unprecedented heat wave has taken heavy toll of life in South India. Numerous fatal cases of sun- stroke have been reported, and many persons have perished as a result of village fires, the thatched roofs hav- ing ignited. Thermometers in Hyderabad have registered a record shade tempera- ture of 124 degrees, and tempera- tures of 118 are common over a wide area. Eleven deaths from the heat occur- red in Lucknow yesterday, and there were 200 fatal cases in adjoining vil- lages. Animals and birds are dying in thousands. In Assam, on the contrary, heavy rain has fallen. At Cherrapunji, the wettest place in the world, 23 inches fell in one day.
