Le Dr William S. Carlson, spécialiste de l'Arctique, a déclaré hier soir 
que les calottes polaires fondaient à une vitesse étonnante et 
inexpliquée, et menaçaient d'inonder les ports maritimes en faisant 
monter le niveau des océans. Le Dr Carlson a déclaré qu'il faudrait des 
centaines d'années pour que la fonte ait un effet important, mais que le 
rythme de la fonte au cours du dernier demi-siècle avait été extrêmement 
rapide. "Les glaciers de Norvège et d'Alaska ne sont plus que la moitié 
de ce qu'ils étaient il y a 50 ans. La température autour du Spitzberg a 
tellement changé que la période de navigation s'est allongée de trois à 
huit mois par an", a-t-il déclaré.

     Melting Ice May Swamp Seaports
CLEVELAND. February 18.—
Dr. William S. Carlson, an Arctic expert, said last night that polar ice 
caps were melting at an astonishing and unexplained rate, and 
threatening to swamp sea-ports by raising ocean levels. Dr. Carlson said 
it would take hundreds of years for the melting to have much effect, but 
the rate in the last half-century had been exceedingly rapid. "The 
glaciers of Norway and Alaska are only half the size they were 50 years 
ago. The temperature around Spitzbergen has so modified that the sailing 
time has lengthened from three to eight months of the year," he said.
