I’ve got news for you: all those hundreds of Linux distros can exist and offer a wide range of choice while continuing tto interoperate as part of a common ecosystem precisely because they are built on a common OS kernel. Compare the BSD situation, with only a fraction of the number of variants, yet they are far more fragmented than the Linux situation is, without offering anywhere near corresponding variety.
