When I first started meeting hardcore record collectors (in the '80s), it wasn't long before I realized that quite a few of them were likely tone deaf. This one guy played a doo-wop record for me that cost him several hundred dollars (that was 40 years ago). I pointed out that the lead's voice cracked and that the background singers couldn't stay on-key.
