It depends in your device and the Android version used.

If you have "gesture navigation" with a line at the bottom of the
display below the current app, then drag from bottom to the middle of
the display and then lift your finger. Then you will see a list of
currently used apps.

If you have "three button navigation" there is one square button which
you can tap to get the list of currently used apps.
