The issue is of course that a lot of modern games (even non-rpg ones) are very much inspired by those very story-driven and otherwise mechanical eastern style crpgs (think Final Fantasy or Dragon Warrior) that became popular in the 90s. It's a different approach to roleplaying games, although the DNA still is in there. Somewhere.
