If your 2SV via SMS reference (also) refers to WhatsApp: 2SV via SMS is only used during registration, not during normal use. And it's optional, another method is to get the 2SV code via an automated voice call [1]. That's how it done for a landline [2] number or/and SIM-less device and the same method can be used for a 'normal' device, i.e. mostly - but not limited to - a smartphone.
