That was a little primitive. Windows 95 introduced the Start Menu and for better or worse became what I thought the desktop should look like. I forget all the managers I tried on Linux in the early days. mwm, tmw, FVWM, IceWM, Sawfish, etc but I preferred the ones that looked like Windows.
