I know. The “three-fifths compromise” was so that the slave-owning states 
could have their slave population count towards their votes for the 
President, without the slaves having the actual vote themselves. That’s 
why the Electoral College exists -- it’s a holdover from the slavery era 
that has long passed its dump-by date.

And don’t forget the fact that the Brits were already making the first 
moves towards recognizing black folk as actual human beings. Abolishing 
slavery was just a few decades away.
