Sounds a lot like Thief back in the day. I remember I had some fun with the first one (Master of Shadows). But it felt like an overgrown intro, there was a long long stretch of intro or gameplay until you finally arrived at some nook that would be your home base in whatever medieval style town it was. I think I quite around then and didn't come back to it. Combat was also possible but as I recall it was so clunky that fighting more than one enemy was pretty much impossible. But Styx hits hard and at least the basic guards had no chance one on one.
