The AT&T PC clone (itself a rebranded Olivetti machine) was an 8086. That was my first exposure to the IBM PC compatible world, an AT&T PC clone running the 8086. While one /could/ measure the performance difference in benchmarks, in real world usage it was not markedly 'faster' than an 8088 based system (i.e., the 20MB hard disk was the same performance for both, and its sluggishness was what one spent most of one's time waiting upon).
