Removing the outlier from the unnamed hurricane of 1938, there are 157 confirmed deaths. The most northern point of California is Cape Mendocino at 40°44', where as the southernmost point in New England Great Captain Island, Connecticut at 40°59′. IOW, the entirety of New England is north of the northern most point in California, yet across the same time period New England had more than 8 times as many deaths from storms that were classified as hurricanes.
