I have not yet tried it but it offers much faster lossless compression versus PNG. Also, lossy compression can be strictly defined by the user. Yes, folks, this is FOSS. There ain't no hand holding or "click on the pretty button" interface. One either knows what one is doing or else one runs like a baby to mamma Micro$lop/Apphole. I encourage you all to try LERC and report your results.
