"Communist" or "Communist dupe" were the accusations thrown at Ike by
the loony fringe.

Eisenhower put his influence behind the original version of the 1957
civil rights act - to no effect due to the southern-western filibuster -
and was very unhappy to see it cut down to an ineffective shadow of
itself. This hurt him in certain circles but as most of the virulent
racists a this time supported the Democrats anyway, he didn't mind.

Even LBJ managed to get shot at during his months in the navy.
